What Happened to May 21?: Harold Camping’s Prediction of the End and His Embarrassment
During the past weeks, when traveling home on a bus, I always pass by a billboard that says Judgment Day is on May 21, 2011. Every time I see the billboard, I just laugh to myself. It was only last week that I learned this was not just a fad in the Philippines; it’s worldwide!
Harold Camping, an American Christian broadcaster who founded Family Radio, made the prediction. He made some calculations and concluded that May 21st is the judgment day. He has already predicted judgment days on 1988 and 1994. Obviously, both failed.
But May 21 was just another ordinary day. To his embarrassment, Camping’s third prediction ended up just like his first two. Now, he claims that May 21 was a “spiritual” day of judgment, and the end is yet to come on October 21. Excuses!
I find it arrogant and ignorant for Camping to be able to “predict” the end. The Bible says in Matthew 24:36:
36“But concerning that day and hour no one knows, not even the angels of heaven, nor the Son, but the Father only.
We must not concern ourselves with specific dates. Instead, and indeed, we must look for the return of Christ (which no one knows, and will ever know, when) and seek to be found faithful upon His return (read Matthew 25).
